How to Equip a Barbershop
Work through the shop in zones and you won't get to opening week missing something. This guide covers chairs, stations, the wash area, front of house, and what it actually costs to equip a barbershop.
What it takes to equip a barbershop
- The chairs. One barber chair per barber, reclining if you offer shaves or beard work. Plan roughly 5 feet of clearance around each chair for full recline plus movement on both sides.
- Stations and mirrors. One station per chair with storage for clippers, guards, and product, plus mirrors and lighting that make the cut look right.
- The wash area. A backwash unit covers shampoos, beard washes, and post-cut rinses. Even shops that don't advertise washing usually want one.
- Front of house. A reception desk and waiting seating. Clients spend real time here, and it's where your retail sells.
- Floor and support. Anti-fatigue mats matter more than anyone expects when you're standing ten hours a day, plus carts to keep tools within reach.
One chair or six?
Single-chair shops serve one client at a time and sell a one-on-one experience, which supports premium pricing. Multi-chair shops move more volume and spread fixed costs across more revenue. Either way, buy the chair quality you'd want in year five, not the cheapest option that gets you open — the pump is the first thing to fail on budget equipment, and it fails while a client is in the seat.
Common questions
Barber chair or styling chair? Barber chairs recline with a headrest and footrest for shaves and grooming. Styling chairs sit upright and cost less — fine for haircut-only shops.
Do I need plumbing or electrical for barber chairs? No. Standard barber chairs run on a manual hydraulic pump. Only the shampoo area needs plumbing.
